What Do the Different Strains Do?

Dr TerpJuly 2, 20254 min read

Understanding the differences between Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid strains is key to getting the most out of your cannabis experience.

One of the most common questions from new cannabis consumers is: what’s the difference between the strains? While the science is more nuanced than simple categories suggest, understanding Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid strains is a great starting point for finding what works for you.

Indica: The Relaxer

Indica plants are shorter, bushier, and have broader leaves. They typically grow faster and produce higher yields. But it’s the effects that most people care about:

  • Body-focused effects – Indicas are known for producing a heavy, relaxing body sensation often described as “couch lock.”
  • Sedating – Great for winding down at the end of the day or helping with sleep.
  • Pain relief – The body-heavy effects make Indicas popular for managing physical discomfort.
  • Appetite stimulation – Indicas are well-known for triggering hunger (the “munchies”).

Best used: Evening and nighttime. When you want to relax, sleep, or manage physical discomfort.

Sativa: The Energiser

Sativa plants grow tall and thin with narrower leaves. They take longer to grow and typically have lower yields, but what they lack in quantity they make up for in effect:

  • Mind-focused effects – Sativas produce a more cerebral, uplifting high that stimulates creativity and thought.
  • Energising – Unlike Indicas, Sativas can increase energy and motivation.
  • Social – Many users find Sativas enhance social interactions and communication.
  • Anxiety risk – For some users, particularly at high doses, Sativas can increase anxiety or paranoia.

Best used: Daytime. Creative projects, social situations, physical activities, and when you need to stay alert.

Hybrid: The Best of Both

Most modern cannabis strains are hybrids, meaning they contain genetics from both Indica and Sativa plants. Breeders have spent decades crossing strains to develop specific effect profiles:

  • Indica-dominant hybrids – Lean towards relaxation but with some cerebral activity. Good for evening use while still being functional.
  • Sativa-dominant hybrids – Provide energy and creativity with some body relaxation to prevent the anxiety that pure Sativas can sometimes cause.
  • Balanced hybrids – Offer equal effects from both parent strains, providing a versatile experience suitable for various situations.

Beyond Indica and Sativa: The Role of Terpenes

Modern cannabis science suggests that the Indica/Sativa distinction may be less important than the terpene profile of a strain. Terpenes are aromatic compounds that influence both flavour and effects:

  • Myrcene – Earthy, musky. Associated with sedation and muscle relaxation.
  • Limonene – Citrusy. Associated with mood elevation and stress relief.
  • Caryophyllene – Spicy, peppery. Anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Linalool – Floral. Calming and anti-anxiety effects.
  • Pinene – Pine-like. May counteract some THC-induced memory impairment.
